Salary slip = payslip

In South Africa a salary slip and a payslip are the same document, and Section 33 of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act makes it compulsory on every pay day.

What a salary slip must include

  • Employer's name and address
  • Employee's name and occupation
  • The pay period (for example 1 to 31 March 2026)
  • Gross remuneration before deductions
  • Each deduction itemised: PAYE, UIF, and any others
  • The net amount actually paid

Understanding the deductions

The two statutory deductions on most salary slips are PAYE and UIF. UIF is 1% of the employee's gross pay, matched by a 1% employer contribution that is not shown on the slip. PAYE (income tax) is worked out from the SARS tax tables based on annual taxable income. Work both out yourself, enter them as deduction lines, and the generator subtracts them from gross pay to show the net pay. It does not calculate PAYE or UIF for you.

Send salary slips on WhatsApp

The generator gives you a PDF salary slip that you share yourself:

  • Fill in the employer, employee, pay period, earnings, and deductions
  • Check the gross, total deductions, and net pay in the preview
  • Click Download PDF and choose 'Save as PDF' in the print dialog
  • In the employee's WhatsApp chat, tap attach, choose Document, and pick the PDF
  • Keep the PDF in a folder per employee as your payroll record

Sending the slip as a document, not a photo, keeps it sharp enough for the employee to use as proof of income at a bank or landlord. Nothing is saved in the generator and refreshing the page clears the form, so download each slip before you move on to the next employee. For worked PAYE examples, see the payslip generator page, and for the legal detail, the BCEA Section 33 requirements.

FAQ

Is a salary slip the same as a payslip?

Yes. In South Africa a salary slip and a payslip are the same document: a written record given to an employee showing gross pay, deductions like PAYE and UIF, and net pay. Section 33 of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act requires one on every pay day.

Is this salary slip generator free?

Yes. Fill in the employer, employee, earnings, and deductions, and download a professional salary slip PDF. There is no signup, and everything runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

What must a South African salary slip show?

Under Section 33 of the BCEA it must show the employer's name and address, the employee's name and occupation, the pay period, gross remuneration, each deduction itemised, and the net amount paid. The generator on this page includes all of these fields.

Does the salary slip calculate PAYE and UIF?

You enter PAYE and UIF as deduction lines yourself. UIF is 1% of gross pay. PAYE follows the SARS tax tables. Once you enter the amounts, the generator handles the layout, totals, and net pay.

Can I send a salary slip on WhatsApp?

Yes. Download the salary slip as a PDF, then open the employee's WhatsApp chat, tap attach, choose Document, and send the file. This is useful for staff who have no email address. The generator does not send or store anything itself, so keep the PDF for your records.
